What’s Missing?

You might remember, that a little over a year ago, a part of our precious beach front,    …..  north of Sunrise Boulevard, went out with the tide !!!

Giving our City Manager Feldman, and our Mayor Seiler,  credit, – they swooped in and got a gob of money from the State of Florida to put Humpty Dumpty back together again!

And looking at the beach this past week, a little over a year later,  there is only one thing that is still left missing  –  …

                                                the Beach ….. !

  1. At 1:45 am sunday morning I was awaken to the sounds of emergency vehicles in front of the Seasons Condominium here on A1A. I rushed to the elevator and out the front door of my condominium only to see an out of town college student laying in the street after he was hit by a car in front of the Casablanca Restaurant at Alhambra Street. College girls were standing around crying and the young college men were indignant because they couldn’t justify how the city would allow such a dangerous corner to exist. Hopefully now someone in City Hall will finally do something about the dangerous bend on A1A, dangerous pedestrian crosswalk and to seriously address the lack of adequate street lighting at Alhambra and along the “strip”.

Everyone who lives here on the beach knows the corner of Alhambra and A1A is dangerous and it was just a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed and now hopefully someone is going to finally take action. It is tragic a young college student has to be the one to call attention to this problem. I have seen many pedestrian close calls and I have even seen a car which missed the bend, go crashing through the bushes.

For six months of the year we here on A1A are without over head street lighting because of the turtles. There is no reason why lower (turtle friendly) pedestrian street lights cannot be attached to the sides of the unlit over head street light poles on the west side of A1A similar to the turtle friendly ones on the east side of the street and similar to those like they have in Lauderdale By The Sea. At this point, this is not an option, it just needs to be done. Further south “down the strip” again, tables and chairs along the sidewalks in front of the restaurants are being extended further rand further towards the street causing pedestrians to have to walk single file to get past the restaurants or to have to walk in the street to get by. The lack of street lights makes it especially dangerous because there are no street lights and it is hard to see the pedestrians at night. It is especially dark in front of the Ritz Carlton and Beach Place which invites crime to our street and surrounding neighborhood..

  2. Well, if we do get more of a beach there, I would like to be able to actually see it. If you want dark on the beach – just ride South on A1A from Sunrise to Vistamar, in front of the Bonnet House. It is so dark there you can barely see your feet in front of you. ALL of the FPL streetlights on the west side are out. People walk down that stretch of the beach in total darkness. Sadly, this could be a beautiful stretch of the beach. I would love to see artists sell paintings there, leaned up against that Bonnett House wall. People love to buy art associated with the seashore. It could be a wonderful connector between Sunrise Blvd, The B, Sunrise Lane and North Beach, rather than a lonely strip of darkness. My two cents for the day….

  3. Sandy brushed our coast as she blew over the Bahamas on Oct 29, 2012 during high tide and full moon taking out about 5 blocks of A1A
The wave action and ‘sucking’ back of the tides action undermined the asphalt road substrate of gravel. When the gravel went, the asphat above did too. The sheet piles placed months later eliminated the wave action.
This is the movement of the seas, the tides, the ocean floor and man-made stuff built to close to the ocean.

So what company and cohorts will amke millions of dollars on this boondoggle of re-sanding the beach?

Mother Nature will repeat this event.
    Don’t believe me ?
    Have a look at this

  4. I recently spent a few days on Miami Beach and can say Ft. Lauderdale Beach in comparison looks very bad. There is not enough sand, the slope is too extreme and it looks like what’s left of it could be sucked out to sea anytime. If the people who care about Ft. Lauderdale Beach want it to remain a destination for tourists they ought to fix it ‘like right now’ before you have nothing left to fix.

  5. I was almost run over at that same crosswalk this past Friday night — distracted (buzzed woman came flying up around the curve while I was in the crosswalk — I had to run back out of the crosswalk. Hope the young man is ok. This should be a Red Light — far back from the crosswalk.

  6. BullS IT WAS mayor jack seiler. CREDIT IS DUE THE CITY MANAGER FOR at least BEING ON THE SCENE.

however IT WAS BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSIONER CHIP LAMARCA (R) AND FDOT SECRETARY JIM WOLFE OF FDOT {USING MY NEXT MORNING PHOTOS OF THE FLOODED BEACH)…WHICH RAN ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE HERALD, AND JUST ABOUT EVERY other TYPE Of MEDIA ETC, WHICH WERE SENT immediately TO TALLY BY BOTH jim wolfe and chip lamarca AS EXHIBITS}.

plaudits to fdot secretary wolfe, who QUICKLY LINED UP ABOUT $13 MILLION and his engineers quickly came up with the ne16th court area A1A plan.

due to inept beach commissioners and self centered lobbyists for twenty plus years we have been waiting for sand and a lot more on our grossly neglected barrier island….

BEACH REPLENISHMENT….when jim naugle was mayor I (ART SEITZ) after talking to miami herald editorial writer wingate paine, i brought Broward EPA Beach Chief Steve Higgins to the beach committee which was sun setting and then to the ft laud commission….steve higgins took the first long long over due step, the county paid the $6000.? application fee…
and submitted a long over due application for fort lauderdale to receive sand from the Army Corps.

Next to nothing happened during congressman clay shaw’s time in office. art.

  7. He is correct. A1A is under FDOT which was a lifesaver since the State had to kick in State coffer Tax dollars, along with the county and city kicking in Tax Dollars that we all put in their respective coffers.

    As to this –
“…..ot a gob of money from the State of Florida to put Humpty Dumpty back together again!…”
Tim you were an elected. Widgets aren’t being made at city hall. The funds paying the nut for city hall, police, fire stations, sewer and water plants are Taxes, Fees and Fines. That gob of money was just the state’s cut re-distributed to A1A repairs.

  8. i think the city of fort lauderdale should get a credit card with a high credit limit with home depot…….
then the mayor and the city commissioners can get together, go to home depot and buy as many bags of sand that they can…..
drive that sand down to the area of 16th street and dump the bags onto the beach….they can then wash their feet in the showers and drive back to home depot and do it all over again….
when the eastside home depot runs out of sand they can drive to the west home depot and continue as stated above until the beach is replenished….
PS. I”M PRETTY SURE THE LIGHTS ARE OUT OR DIM TO “KEEP SEA TURTLES IN THE DARK”.
WHICH BY THE WAY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BEACH BEING SUCKED OUT TO SEA…..

  9. goog idea but
they have the high credit limit card already
but they are squandering the money on other stuff

  10. You are absolutely right Tim concerning the beach. People that live on the beach County Comm. Chip Lamarca just last week was up in Tallahasse on his own time mind you making sure funds ,monies etc. are going to be going to Ft.Lau beach for beach renourishment. Thank you Comm.Lamarca. I got to tell the residents on the beach that are in Chip’ district he has our back. He is always @ area functions and is well informed @ to what is going on. Give him another four (4) yrs. people. What and vote for Ken Keechl instead so he can suck up to the “gay gang” in Wilton Manors. Remember the 3g to the boyfriend folks. Keechl is shady. All he is out for is enriching his pockets and more concerning his lining his boyfriend’s pockets(3g every month to his lover). District four stick w/ Chip Lamarca……
